First Android Ice Cream Sandwich screenshots leaked?

First Android Ice Cream Sandwich screenshots leaked?

Our first taste of Google's next pudding

Is this Android Ice Cream Sandwich?
Roots Wiki

It seems we're seeing the future, if leaked images of Google's new Ice Cream Sandwich Android iteration are anything to go by.

Android Police and Roots Wiki seem to have come up with an odd cross-site team up to leak four pretty plausible screengrabs of the latest version of Google's mobile OS, which will likely be Android 4.0.

Disappointingly it seems the new OS is currently quite similar to the old version in terms of user interface, with a tweaked menu system and slightly altered notifications bar the main differences.

Slicker, quicker and beepier

However, don't get too down-hearted just yet, as it's likely this IRK36B build (we know, catchy) is a long way from the finished product and there may be a lot more to come from the design team.

IPhone Detects Blood Sugar, Without Blood

IPhone Detects Blood Sugar, Without Blood

Researchers at Northeastern University have developed a new way for iPhones to measure blood sugar levels without drawing blood, showcasing the increasingly sophisticated applications of mobile devices.

Professor Heather Clark at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences modified an iPhone to measure blood using "non-invasively monitor biomarkers." Instead of drawing blood, the system requires a person to be injected with a small amount of "nanoparticle solution," which glows when exposed to molecules such as glucose.

Then, an iPhone --- equipped with a special battery-powered case, camera lens filter and LED array -- reads the levels of fluorescence and sends the results to a computer for analysis. Clark plans to create an iPhone app to analyze nanoparticle data.

If the technology becomes commercialized, users may soon iPhones to track other "biomarkers," such as sodium and even blood oxygen levels.

"Let's say you have medication with a very narrow therapeutic range," she said, "you have to try it a dosage and see what happens."

Using the modified iPhone system, Clark suggests people may also monitor the effects of new drugs in the bloodstream in real-time.

The technology, though barrier-breaking, isn't alone in its field, as the market for mobile medical apps continues to grow. Other iPhone apps can analyze stroke victims' brains, read EKG scans and even detect malaria and dengue fever.

There's also an app to detect melanoma called Skin Scan, which snaps a photo of suspicious spots and analyzes them to determine if a visit to a dermatologist is warranted.

As medical apps become more popular and utilized in the medical community, the FDA is looking to regulate the mobile tools used in hospitals and clinics to ensure quality control.

"We wanted to make sure that we are consistent in regulating medical devices so nothing has changed," said Bakul Patel, the FDA's policy advisor. "If somebody makes a stethoscope on an iPhone, it doesn't change the level of oversight we have of a stethoscope."

The plan may irk some developers reluctant to wait on FDA approval, though it may help standardize medical care across the country.

Regardless, technology like Clark's app will keep growing, along with increased demand for medical apps revolutionizing health-care by making it more accessible and even economical.

Security expert warns hackers can attack Android

Security expert warns hackers can attack Android

BOSTON (Reuters) - A mobile security expert says he has found new ways for hackers to attack phones running Google Inc's Android operating system.

Riley Hassell, who caused a stir when he called off an appearance at a hacker's conference last week, told Reuters he and colleague Shane Macaulay decided not to lay out their research at the gathering for fear criminals would use it attack Android phones.

He said in an interview he identified more than a dozen widely used Android applications that make the phones vulnerable to attack.

"App developers frequently fail to follow security guidelines and write applications properly," he said.

"Some apps expose themselves to outside contact. If these apps are vulnerable, then an attacker can remotely compromise that app and potentially the phone using something as simple as a text message."

He declined to identify those apps, saying he fears hackers might exploit the vulnerabilities.

"When you release a threat and there's no patch ready, then there is mayhem," said Hassell, founder of boutique security firm Privateer Labs.
Hassell said he and Macaulay alerted Google to the software shortcomings they unearthed.

Google spokesman Jay Nancarrow said Android security experts discussed the research with Hassell and did not believe he had uncovered problems with Android.

"The identified bugs are not present in Android," he said, declining to elaborate.

It was the first public explanation for the failure of Hassell and Macaulay to make a scheduled presentation at the annual Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, the hacking community's largest annual gathering.
They had been scheduled to talk about "Hacking Androids for Profit." Hundreds of people waited for them to show up at a crowded conference room.

Hassell said in an interview late on Thursday the pair also learned -- at the last minute -- that some of their work may have replicated previously published research and they wanted to make sure they properly acknowledged that work.

"This was a choice we made, to prevent an unacceptable window of risk to consumers worldwide and to guarantee credit where it was due," he said.
A mobile security researcher familiar with the work of Hassell and Macaulay said he understood why the pair decided not to disclose their findings.

"When something can be used for exploitation and there is no way to fix it, it is very dangerous to go out publicly with that information," the researcher said. "When there is not a lot that people can do to protect themselves, disclosure is sometimes not the best policy."

Hassell said he plans to give his talk at the Hack in The Box security conference in Kuala Lumpur in October.

Mobile Internet Costs from Around the World

Google Follows Apple Into Hardware, But With Weak Hand

Google Follows Apple Into Hardware, But With Weak Hand

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) will buy mediocre handset firm Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI). It is probably a play to compete with Apple. The difference is that Motorola has a relatively weak line of products, particularly compared with market leaders HTC, Samsung, and LG. At least most Motorola phones run Google’s Android OS.

The deal looks a bit like the joint venture between smartphone also-ran Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). Microsoft did not make an outright acquisition, but the arrangement is close. It gives Nokia an operating system other than its ancient Symbian product, and marketing dollars from Redmond. Microsoft gets a platform for its Windows wireless OS product, although the size of the Nokia platform is shrinking at an unusually rapid pace.

Motorola’s best years are far behind–back half a decade to its successful RAZR product. Motorola was never able to replace it as the cellphone product aged.

Perhaps the most stunning thing about the Google buyout of Motorola is the price. Google will pay $40 a share–$12.5 billion. That is a 63% premium. Before the acquisition, Motorola’s stock had fallen from $36.34 in February to its present $24.50–down 20%.

Google must see something in Motorola that no other company did. There were no other suitors knocking on the door

Apple A6 chip trial production begins

New mobile processor slated for 2012 release

Like the A5 chip, but one louder

Chip company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) has kicked off a trial production run of the A6 processor, set to power Apple mobile devices in 2012.

The chip is said to be based on a 28nm process, an upgrade on Apple's current iPad 2-powering A5 chip, which is 45nm.

It's also the first Apple mobile chip to include 3D stacking technology, in which two or more layers of components are stacked atop each other. This implementation of complex 3D components is thought to be the reason for the trial run.

Thanks to the 28nm process and 3D stacking, the chip is able to pack more transistors into its tiny form factor, resulting in greater computing power and efficiency.

Leaked Images of HTC's Holiday Protoype [PHOTO]

Images of HTC’s new Android-based smartphone -- which is expected to be called the Holiday -- were apparently leaked and picked up by several sites including Engadget.

The new Android smartphone has a large "CALIFORNIA" sticker on its cover or on the back, which may mean that the device will be released in various parts of the U.S. with different cases.

If the rumored specifications are true, then the device will arrive with a 1.2GHz processor, a 4.5-inch qHD display at 960 x 540 pixel resolution. A "myAT&T" app in one menu suggests the smartphone will be released through AT&T. Previous rumors said that the device will also have 1GB RAM and an 8 MP rear and a 1.3 MP front-facing camera.

Nothing much is known about the device at the moment, but the HTC Holiday may also arrive with a conductive charge port on the back, according to an XDA report.

Bollywood Movies turned Video Games

With Shah Rukh Khan himself giving us a sneak peek into cut-scenes from the Playstation version of 'Ra.One: The Game', we give you a flashback of movie-to-game promotions in Bollywood.
It is interesting to note that in Hollywood, the trend is to release a film's game version after the successful run of in theaters (Harry Potter, The Matrix Trilogy, every Hollywood action franchise ever)

Ra.One

Shah Rukh Khan has given us a glimpse of the Playstation 3 game version of 'Ra.One', only a month after news of the film-to-video game prequel of Ra.One. However, with only three months to the heavily anticipated film (SRK will reportedly spend over 175 crores on the movie's production. The G.One full bodysuit reportedly cast over one Crore rupees) 'Ra.One: The Game'

is anticipated to release just a month before the film' release in October.
A source informs that one chapter of the game will have a Kareena Kapoor avatar doing Lara Croft-ish stunts.
SRK writes: Yippeee my own personal video game...though the hair is little pointy…"

Krishh

If the stolen prequel plot from ET, the stolen costume from Daredevil the stolen love story from Spiderman and the stolen time travel story from Paycheck weren't enough of an embarrassment.

Now, imagine a dorky combination of Mario and Contra aesthetics. Now throw in a plastic-like side portrait of Krrish hopping over obstacles and kicking bad guys. That's the video game adaption of "India's answer to ET".
The shoddy amateurish quake ality makes sense when you consider that it's a fan-made game. the Krrish Game Cheats that promise "Krrish Health Unlimited with Unlimited Super Power Attacks" is almost adorable.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zoya Akhtar’s 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' (ZNMD) lets users participate in the La Tomatina festival, an annual event in Spain that involves throwing and squashing an unlimited supply of tomatoes on friends and family all day long.

You play as Arun (played by Hrithik Roshan), Imran (Farhan Akhtar) or Kabir (Abhay Deol) and throw tomatoes on other characters to score points. Negative points for lobbing tomatoes at women.

the first 'Don' remake, a modern take on the original 'Don' (played by Amitabh Bachchan) has two versions. Race and Chase has you racing on the streets of Kuala Lumpur to capture the Don. Whereas, the role-playing game requires the player to help SRK find the disk that his Don status is a case of mistaken identity.
Heavily inspired by the film's rushes, particularly the spectacular car crashes, sky diving and fight sequences, these feature prominently in the game.
The Don game was the first Bollywood game to be launched online, and that too in for multiplayer gaming.

Love Story 2050

The spectacular flop that was Love Story 2050 (one of the biggest flops of all time, worst Bollywood debuts of all time etc), starred Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra.

Made by Rocking Pixels, the movie's garish sci-fi and embarrassing special effects offered the perfect backdrop to test out Indian gaming technology.
It was, as Rocking Pixels CEO Sanjit Daniel said: to be released as a massively multiplayer game…"

No one has heard of it, ever since.
While legendary Indian movies 'Sholay' and 'Lagaan' both have been adapted into mobile game version, Dhoom 2 was the first for-PC game.

2050' will be the second Hindi film after 'Dhoom 2' to be made into a full-fledged game. FX Labs is believed to be developing a game based on 'Dhoom 2'. Earlier, we've seen mobile games based on films like 'Sholay' and 'Lagaan'.

Ghajini

The 'dangerous man who kills people' theme is ideal for video games. Duke Nukem, Max Payne, the entire GTA franchise is based on the art of multiple homicide. Which is why FX Labs, responsible for the Dhoom 2 game also worked on Ghajini - The Game.

Ghajini's game version was India's first 3D PC action game based on a Bollywood movie. The Third Person Action game recreated movie locations, scenes and visual content from the movie for an authentic gaming experience. And, as Sanjay (dubbed by Aamir Khan), you got to kill people!

However, the game's cover feels a lot like 'Hitman' and lasts for only 15 minutes.

Dhoom 2

'Dhoom 2''s $34 million “Dhoom 2” box office revenue did nothing for the Dhoom 2 game. Titled D:2.5, the game was to be made by FXLab Studios in a collaboration with Yash Raj Films, a first-ever Indian movie to full-length PC game venture. and that too, in 3D.

Pre-launch announcements by FX Lab Studios mentioned "…international AAA quality production standards…superheat songs”.

The game was to be designed to allow users to play as their favorite Dhoom 2 characters and perform exciting missions and mini-games, based on the movie's screenplay.

While FXLabs had launched the first look at characters from the movie (who look suspiciously like the cartoon Vengaboys), the game itself disappeared.

Facebook Messenger Takes on Traditional SMSing

After Apple, Facebook too, has entered the Messenger game.
Apple had launched iMessage to take on the exclusive Blackberry Messenger only months ago for iOS enabled devices.
Now, Facebook, with Messenger for iPhone and Android, offers messaging built into the social network.

According to Facebook, the new standalone Messenger software is part of Facebook's aim in becoming a communications hub on phones.
The app allows users to include photos and location coordinates in messages, and also lets users send text messages to phone numbers - much like Blackberry Messenger.
According to Andrew Bosworth, a Facebook product director: "One click from the home screen is a valuable trait…built specifically for mobile-to-mobile. Our messages stuff was built for a convergence between mobile and Web and e-mail and a bunch of other things."

However, profitable texting plans and per message fees will be an aspect to consider. "SMS to SMS: those are controlled by the carriers," Bosworth said in an interview "That's a closed loop."
Apple will similarly feature a mobile app called iMessage into iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, going beyond cell carrier infrastructure, and will allow free text messages to other users of Apple devices.

A Simple Guide to Blackberry Autotext Features

Autocorrect and autotext. Entire websites have been dedicated to the time your phone wrote 'sinful' when you wanted to write 'single' and 'Subwoofer' instead of 'Winehouse'.

However, Blackberry power users, the kind who pound out messages on the BBM, check their Facebook and tweet - all within minutes need autocorrect for the tedious task of fixing apostrophes and capitalizing your "i". Ditto for entering your number - you simply write “mynumber” and it feeds the number automatically.
Blackberry recommends the following Autotext settings, including frequently used words and statements.

How to Make AutoText Shortcuts on your BlackBerry

Go to the Options (the Wrench logo)
Select AutoText
Scroll through the existing presets to get an idea of the current options available.

To make your own AutoText Shortcuts

Click on BlackBerry Menu Button.
Go to New
Type the quick text in the first field.
The second filed will show what it replaces with.
Click on Menu, and then on Save
